CHICAGO (WFLD/FOX) -- The city's school leaders have decided that kindergarten is not too young to learn about sex.
Currently, the curriculum begins for students in the fifth grade, and the school system said each level of instruction would be age appropriate.
Kindergartners through third graders would learn about their anatomy, all living things that reproduce andall living things that reproduce and inappropriate touching.
Fourth graders would focus on puberty and HIV/AIDS. After fifth grade, teachers lead discussions about human reproduction, contraception and abstinence.
Parents who are uncomfortable with the new policy would be able opt out.
"I just don't think it's appropriate," said parent Melissa Diebold. "They have no concept of anything like that at that stage in life."
Mikkel Nance believes sex-ed should begin at home but also welcomes schools getting involved early on.
"He's 7, in second grade and we've had introductory conversations on how things work and how the body works," Nance said of his son. "I do applaud CPS for talking to children early. The only concern is how they implement it and if they involved parents in that process."
The proposed policy follows the National Sexuality Education Standards composed by four health organizations.
Under the new program, the district would also address sexual orientation and bullying for the first time.
"The parents are kind of in denial about what's happening," Ross said. "You know in urban populations the average age that kids start to have sex is between 13 and 14."City school officials stir controversy as they decide to start teaching sex education to child as young as kindergarten age
